Psychological Determinants of Suicide and Suicidal Ideation among Youth in Kerala and Intervention Strategies By Dr. Sudheer  K.V.

Abstract

Youth suicide is a global public health issue, being the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15-29. This article  explores recent suicide statistics, the psychological determinants that lead to suicidal behavior in youths, including depression, anxiety, impulsivity, trauma, and substance abuse. Additionally, social and environmental factors such as bullying, family dysfunction, academic pressure, and societal stigma contribute significantly to the risk of youth suicide.

The presentation further delves into psychological theories like the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide and the Stress-Diathesis Model to explain the underlying mechanisms of suicidal ideation. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs, such as behavioral and mood changes, verbal cues, and risky behaviours, which can indicate suicidal tendencies.

This paper proposes a range of intervention strategies, including school-based mental health programs, cognitive-behavioral therapy, crisis intervention hotlines, and family therapy. The role of community interventions, such as stigma reduction campaigns, increased access to mental health care, and responsible media reporting, is highlighted as essential for broad-scale prevention efforts.

Finally, the presentation underscores the critical roles educators and parents play in suicide prevention, emphasizing the need for open communication and early intervention to support at-risk youths. The conclusion calls for continued research, improved mental health care access, and a global commitment to reducing youth suicide rates.
